Forget Khedira – Arsenal Consider Cheap La Liga Alternate For Defensive Midfield

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is considering a bid for Sevilla’s holding midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak who could be a cheaper alternative to Sami Khedira. Krychowiak recently moved to Sevilla from French side Reims for a fee close to £3.5m and signed a 4-year contract that will keep him in Spain until 2018. However, despite that, Wenger has already made up his mind and feels that the Poland international is the man who can solve his side’s persistent problem of the holding midfielder’s position according to TMW.

Arsenal were being linked with Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira last summer but his massive £200,000-a-week wages were a stumbling block. The same could happen again in January, so the Frenchman will try to sign Krychowiak from Sevilla instead.

Arsenal have struggled to find a player who can do the dirty work in midfield as Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Jack Wilshere haven’t impressed in that role. The defence hasn’t been strong either which make the situation very desperate for Wenger. He had revealed a few weeks ago that his side will be active in the upcoming January transfer window with a defender and a holding midfielder being the top most priorities.

Krychowiak is predominantly a holding-midfield player but can also be deployed as a center back if required. The Pole has appeared in every single game for Sevilla so far this season and has forged a formidable partnership with Stéphane Mbia and Éver Banega that has helped his side to top Real Madrid in the league table, tied on points with league leaders Barcelona.

At the moment, it’s too early to figure out the fee that Sevilla will be holding out for Krychowiak, but since he just joined the club and signed a long term contract, it will definitely take something much more larger that the £3.5m that Sevilla paid for him.
