Arsenal and Tottenham target Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed that he wants to make the step up in his career next season by moving abroad.
Wijnaldum moved from Feyenoord to PSV Eindhoven in 2011 for a fee of €5m at the age of 20, which in itself is a hint of how good a player he was back then. The 23-year old has shown good development since then and was part of the Dutch squad for the World Cup in June.
Wijnaldum told De Telegraaf as reported by talkSPORT, “Next summer would be a great time to take the next step.
“PSV also know that I am keen to play abroad, I am the age for it. Although I like it here, I do not want to become too old to go abroad, because I want to play there for a few years.
“The more time I take in going, the shorter my career abroad becomes.”
Arsenal and Tottenham are interested in the Attacking midfielder as both the London based sides have struggled so far in the season. While Arsenal have been decent, Spurs have struggled under new manager Mauricio Pochettino. Wijnaldum can be deployed as a central midfielder and a winger in addition to his natural position of an attacking midfielder. His versatility has caught the eye of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who likes to tinker with his side. His side’s injury record isn’t the best either, which could force Wenger’s hand in the January transfer window.
Wijnaldum has made 9 appearances so far for his side and scored 3 goals in those games. He also revealed that he is committed to PSV and wants to help his side to the title before leaving,”First I want to be champion with PSV, and I will fight for it.
“If a club have been good to you and have always been there for you, I feel obliged to do me something in return for that club. I therefore do not wish to leave PSV straight away.” Despite this, it’ll be hard for Phillip Cocu and PSV to reject an offer if it is too good to turn down come January.
