Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini had revealed earlier that the club could sign Steven Gerrard at the end of the season if he is a free agent. Gerrard’s contract expires in June 2015 and there haven’t been any talks about a contract extension. However, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers gave a hint that the Liverpool stalwart will remain at the club and it’s only a matter of time before he is offered a new contract.
Pellegrini signed former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard on a loan from New York City FC in a move which surprised quite a few. Lampard’s performances have justified the move nevertheless as he was the judged the club’s best player for the month of September. The Chilean has now turned his attention towards Gerrard and revealed, “I don’t ever rate players on their age.
“It depends on the money they cost and the number of years they can play for. Like Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard is a top player and he can continue at a high level for a couple more years.”
It’s not a huge surprise that the former Malaga manager has turned his attention towards Gerrard as he is known to have worked with older players and bring the best out of them. Pellegrini has used Euro 2008 winner Marcos Senna at Villarreal, former France international Jeremy Toulalan at Malaga and more recently Lampard at Manchester City very effectively and all these players were termed as ‘past the prime’ before working with Pellegrini.
A move for Gerrard will depend on Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers as the Ulsterman wants to keep hold of his captain and was very confident that the new contract will be offered pretty soon, “I had a meeting with Steven’s representative explaining the situation.
“I very much want him to be a part of what we are doing here. He’s been a brilliant captain for me. I relayed that to the ownership.”
