£20m Target set to reject Manchester United to seal Chelsea switch

Well, believe it or not. According top reports from English Tabloid Express, Barcelona defender Gerrard Pique could soon return to play in the English Premier League. However the Spaniard is set to reject a return to former club Manchester Unitd and join Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. The story claims that a lack of game time has frustrated Pique at the Camp Nou and the centre back might well head toward the exit from the Catalan club in the upcoming January transfer window.

United though are set to offer £20m to Barcelona for the player’s services but Chelsea’s higher bid of £24m means that the Blues are now in pole position to snatch Pique from the Red Devils’ grasp. It most probably means that Mourinho has already intensified his search for John Terry’s replacement. The club captain who is in the twilight of career might not be able to carry on after this season. So despite having the young and inexperienced Kurt Zouma, it looks like a good ploy for Mourinho.

Louis Van Gaalhowever is keen to see Pique at Old Trafford after suffering a number of injuries to his defense. The Dutch legend has already had to deal with Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra leaving the club in the summer before taking chArge. Despite having brought in Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo, United look very thin at the back. Injuries to Phil Jones and Johhny Evans hasn’t helped while Chris Smalling too got sent off during last weekend’s Manchester derby. Thus Paddy McNair and Taylor Blackett has featured but its well known that United will not be challenge for silverware with such inexperience at the back.

Pique will surely be enticed on a possible return to the Premier League but one wonders where will he head or will he stay put at Barcelona despite the rumours?
