Boost For Liverpool As Target Is Unhappy With Spanish Giants

Liverpool have been handed a transfer boost as Barcelona right back Martin Montoya could leave the club after failing to get into the scheme of things under new manager Luis Enrique. Montoya had his chances under late Tito Vilanova and Tata Martino which resulted in him extending his contract in March this year until the year 2018.

Since extending his contract, Montoya hasn’t featured regularly at all which could compel him to leave in January. The 23-year old reportedly has a €20m release clause in his current contract but could cost lesser than that. The Barcelona academy graduate has failed to make the first team ahead of Dani Alves and has made just one appearance in the whole of this season which came in the league.

The situation will alert Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers who are set to let Glen Johnson go as there haven’t been any contract talks between the club and the England international. Johnson’s contract expires next summer, so Liverpool will either sell him for a cut-price deal in January or let him go for free in the summer. His performances have dropped in the last few seasons enabling the fans to call for his head.

Rodgers signed Javier Manquillo in the summer on a 2-year loan spell from Atletico Madrid and could strengthen in January by signing Montoya. The Spanish international would be a long term replacement for Johnson as he is still in his early 20’s. Despite his young age, he has buckets of experience which could help the Reds as they have two inexperienced right backs in Manquillo and Jon Flanagan.

Liverpool will face competition from Inter Milan for the talented right back but are in pole position to sign him as reports in Spain suggest that he will prefer the Premier League.
