Manchester United have won five games in a row and are just eight points behind league leaders Chelsea in 3rd place. Despite that, former Manchester United full-back Gary Neville wasn’t all that impressed as he said that United’s upcoming clash against Liverpool could become a game equivalent to pub-football standard.
Van Gaal admitted that his side were lucky to come out with all three points despite having just two shots on target. The Dutchman however wasn’t impressed with Neville’s comments and said, “The former player of United? That’s an English expression? Hmm. Maybe.
“He can say everything because he is an ex-legend, but as an ex-legend, or a legend, you have to know what you are saying.
“You can interpret: make an interpretation of that.
“It’s not so difficult to make an interpretation, when I say he has to pay attention to his words.”
United’s win against Southampton made it five wins in a row for the first time in two years and there is more to come as most of their 1st team players are injured. United have been impressive in the last few weeks despite the absence of Phil Jones, Angel Di Maria and a few more players who would usually make it into the 1st team. After a winless opening few games, it’s amazing how United have been transformed into a side such as this.
Their next opponents are Liverpool, who are probably their biggest rivals. Van Gaal already has a taste of facing them as his side beat Liverpool in a pre-season friendly in the United States a few months back. Liverpool have had a disappointing season so far and sit 9th in the league; seven points behind United. Considering that they are United’s rivals for a Champions League spot, the Red devils will want to win and create a 10-point gap between themselves and Liverpool.
