Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has recently hinted that signing a new midfielder remains his top priority in the summer transfer window. The Dutchman admitted that the Red Devils need to add some balance to their side despite spending as much as £150m last summer, on seven players including superstars like Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao.
Van Gaal feels the absence of a dynamic midfielder has seen captain Wayne Rooney play in a deeper role in recent weeks as the Dutchman is still unsure about the right combination, as the England International has failed to impose himself on games. On the other hand, both Michael Carrick and Blind have been struggling with injuries this season. This has prompted the United manager to bring in reinforcements when the transfer window opens again. Roma’s Kevin Strootman, Borussia Dortmund duo Marco Reus and Ilkay Gündogan and Juventus’ Paul Pogba have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but nothing yet has materialized. In an interview, Van Gaal said,
“I am looking for balance and I need balance in midfield.”
“When I play with [Adnan] Januzaj and Di Maria in the midfield positions, then you need a certain balance for that kind of creative player.
“So, when you have these creative players, and also [Radamel] Falcao and [Robin] van Persie are creative players, then you have four creative players and you have to look for balance in your team.”
