Reds legend Phil Thompson has urged Kop boss Brendan Rodgers to sign a world-class striker at the end of the season. Liverpool have struggled to score goals this season since Luis Suarez left for Barcelona last season. Further, England international Daniel Sturridge has had his set of injury problems as well and is not in the best of form. This has urged Thompson to suggest that the Rodgers needs to add reinforcements to his side.
In an interview, he told Sky Sports,
“Sturridge’s latest injury confirms that you cannot rely on him throughout the course of a season and Liverpool need suitable cover for him.”
“It’s always been the way for Sturridge, he’s proving quite fragile and we might not see the best of him until next season now.”
“Burnley’s Danny Ings doesn’t have the experience to carry that weight and I think Brendan Rodgers needs to bring in a more established striker.”
“Gonzalo Higuain, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Edinson Cavani or somebody of that ilk is required, which means Liverpool are going to have to spend big to be considered title contenders next season.”
It is not exactly clear which player the Merseyside club will look to sign, but the need for more attacking options is clearly eminent if Liverpool look to challenge for silverware next season.
