The news that Nemanja Vidic could be out of action until Christmas will have devastated every Manchester United supporter in the land.
Originally ruled out for two months after a knee operation in September, the Red Devils had been looking forward to welcoming their captain back into the side within the next couple of weeks. However, Sir Alex Ferguson announced yesterday that he does not expect the big Serbian to be back until December.
Vidic has been an integral part of United’s defence since he joined the club six years ago, with his importance to the team being most notably demonstrated last season. After he was ruled out for the rest of the campaign in December, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side continued to ship goals, ultimately causing them to lose out to bitter rivals Manchester City in the title race. Vincent Kompany helped City claim United’s crown and lifted the trophy in May, as well as being named Premier League player of the Season. A year earlier this had been Vidic. Now he was long forgotten, with City’s Belgian defender considered the best centre back in England.
Had Vidic remained fit for the second half of last season, there is no doubt that United would have fared much better and may well have retained their title. The sheer presence of the Serbian provides a boost to the team, with his defensive capabilities complemented by his constant attacking threat from set pieces.
Vidic is definitely going to be missed again. United fans will hope he can add to their fond memories of him when he returns.
