Atletico Madrid are enjoying one of their best seasons in recent memory and their Number 10, a certain Radamel Falcao, is a big reason.
This is a good time, then, to remember another Atletico number 10, one by the name of Paulo Futre who played a big bart in the club’s success during the early 90s.
The Portguese winger who burtst through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon and then exceled at Porto joined Atletico in 1987 and quickly established himself as a fan favourite thanks to his exciting and dynamic play.
Wait a minute? A winger from Portugal coming through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon? Then going on to light up La Liga? Sounds familiar.
Futre also featured 41 times for his country and helped Atletico win the Spanish Cup in consecutive years (90-91, 91-92) with his numerous goals and assists.
Later in his career, Futre made moves to Italy and back to Portugal with Benfica, and even a brief spell at West Ham, but it is his days at Atletico, where he served as captain for a large majority of his 163 appearances, that will be remembered as his best.
