Ajax recorded a crucial 3-2 victory over fierce rivals PSV Eindhoven at the weekend to gain a 5 point lead at the top of the Eredivisie and to edge closer to a second successive Dutch League title.
Ajax, who have remained unbeaten in their last 10 outings, led in Eindhoven on three separate occasions and weathered the late PSV storm to earn all three points with highly sought after young Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen playing a starring role.
With just 4 games remaining, Ajax appear to be in pole position to retain their status as Champions of Holland under the stewardship of club and international legend Frank De Boer.
Ajax’s title challenge has also been aided by the results of the two other teams who appeared to be offering a challenge to Ajax’s throne. Feyenoord could only muster a 1-1 draw away at RKC Waalwijk on Saturday and Vitesse Arnhem ended their 7 match winning streak as they squandered a 3-0 lead at Roda JC.
Should De Boer and Ajax lift the Eredivisie trophy come the end of the season, it will be the 32nd Dutch title in the Amsterdam club’s history, 11 more than closest challengers PSV.
De Boer will hope that his side can retain the services of talents such as Eriksen this summer and that Ajax can launch an assault on the Champions League knockout stages next season after exiting at the group stage this time round.
