For a club who sit third in the Premier League, two points behind leaders Arsenal, Chelsea don’t have the most impressive forward line at present, do they? With Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o the only real options for Jose Mourinho right now, I would suggest that they are in need of another head up top, and seeing as we are in January here is who I would suggest.
Standing at a little over 6ft, Lorient forward Vincent Aboubakar has scored an impressive 11 Ligue 1 goals in his 20 appearances so far this season and offers something that the Blues don’t currently hold.
While Torres has four league goals, Eto’s has three and Ba has his one, Aboudakar has scored more than all of the three combined and all of his 11 goals have come from inside the box.
He’s a poacher, but he’s a strong player and can also create chances off the back of nothing. He has made 21 key passes this season and claimed two assists, while also racking up a shot accuracy of 68% – a tally higher than anyone in the Chelsea squad. He’s had 40 shots at goal too, so it’s not a case of few shots to miss with.
He’s still young, he’s scoring goals in the French topflight and he offers something to Chelsea that they don’t currently have. There may not be any links between the two but I think the blues should take a chance on him.
