Manchester City have torn apart almost everything that has stood in front of them this season, especially at home. Manuel Pellegrini’s demand for attacking football, combined with the megastars that are currently on the books at the Etihad Stadium has meant that City fans have been treated with some of the best football in the Premier League this season. However, for me they need a new top rate centre-back to come in and cement the backline with Vincent Kompany.
Much of this campaign has seen Joleon Lescott and Martin Demichelis operate the heart of the defence, but neither have really stood out. Kompany has struggled with injuries and form of late, but is starting to settle back into how we are used to seeing him perform.
To compliment his commanding ways and his tendencies to burst forward with the ball at his feet, he did used to operate as a defensive midfielder, after all, is a combative player who is willing to stay back and get stuck in.
He needs to have the ability to pop the ball around too, which is why I put this player’s name forward – Juventus’ Giorgio Chiellini.
The Italy international has provided the base to Juventus’ success over the last few years and as a result would probably cost some serious money, though they say you get what you pay for, and I believe he could be the difference between missing out on the title this season.
So far this season he has played 18 Serie A games and has made 75 clearances, averaged 2.6 tackles per game and 2.3 interceptions. For me he is the top centre-half in European football, and City should look to get him in immediately.
