This may seem like a straight forward question, but after reports have linked Arsenal with Robin van Persie, it got me thinking whether the Gunners going back for the Dutchman after he left for Manchester United. I came to a conclusion, but only after running through a few things which I have discussed below.
Cons
I thought that I would start with the negatives, or at least what I thought were the negatives. Firstly I looked at his injuries, as he has had a lot of them and he is not getting any younger – he turns 31 on his next birthday – and his legs seems as brittle as anyone’s in the league. He has missed game time through muscle problems, groin strains, knee twists and hamstring injuries, while he also missed games because of a knock.
Another problem for me is his age, as I touched upon, but you can twist that and say he would be a good mentor for the likes of Yaya Sanogo and the other young strikers.
Pros
There are far more positives for a move if you are affiliated with Arsenal. His goals cannot be ignored whatever way you look at it – he was the Premier League’s top scorer last season with 26 goals and he scored four more in other competitions, as well as 12 in 18 this season.
He’s a creative player, he can play in various roles and it would help keep Olivier Giroud fresh. The Frenchman has been the main forward at the Emirates this season and he needs a top quality player to come in and support him.
It would also be a good move for van Persie, I think, as Manchester United look to be ready to have a major re-shuffle in the summer, and Arsenal continue their push for silverware.
Gooners, how do you see it? Would you welcome him back? I certainly would.
