Chelsea have cast their eyes on Everton full back Seamus Coleman as a potential summer signing according to Mail Online. The 26-year old had signed a contract extension in July this year that will keep him at the club until 2019, but despite that the blues will move for him.
The Ireland international has been one of the best full backs in the last few years which led to him signing a new deal at Everton but it hasn’t detracted interest from Chelsea as they are more than capable of singing him. With Everton’s financial situation, a £20m offer will be hard to turn down as they need to sell in order to keep competing with the top six sides in the league.
Do Chelsea need another fullback?
Jose Mourinho currently has Branislav Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta as the only right backs at the club, but with John Terry’s age, he might have to move Ivanovic to his natural center back position at times. In that case, the Portuguese will be left with Filipe Luis and Azpilicueta as the only remaining full backs so the need to strengthen in the future is imperative. The Chelsea squad has almost no weakness, but it’s only almost because they are probably an injury or two away from a defensive crisis.
At 26, Coleman would be an ideal signing for Chelsea as he is probably at the peak of his powers and could move to a top side to finally win some silverware in his career. Everton are already considering Barcelona’s Martin Montoya as a potential replacement for Coleman. Montoya has featured just once for Barcelona this season and could move abroad to get regular 1st team action. However, Everton will not find it easy as they’ll have to compete with Liverpool to sign the 23-year old from Barcelona.
