Petr Cech, Chelsea’s number two in goal, has had talks with Real Madrid over a potential transfer as revealed by his agent Victor Kolar.
Cech has been relegated to the bench after Thibaut Courtois’s return which has attracted some interest from top clubs in Europe. Kolar revealed that despite the talks with Real Madrid, it’s unlikely that Cech will move in January as Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wants to keep him as he is the best possible backup that the blues can have.
Kolar was quoted saying by the Daily Star, “We’ve had contact with Real Madrid but they don’t need a ‘keeper right now.
“It’s unlikely Petr will leave in the transfer window because the club and Coach want to keep him to help win the title.
“Petr still has ambitions to play as many games as possible but that’s impossible now. Even so, he has a good feeling at the overall attitude towards him and that’s important.
“The club show him respect and treat him the same way as if he was first choice. The agreement is, and Jose [Mourinho] fulfils it, that Petr should be given the chance to maintain his match sharpness.
“I’m sure it’s a big advantage for a manager when he has two top goalkeepers.”
The 32-year old has been linked with a move to Arsenal, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, and a host of other clubs as he is still pretty much in his prime. However, one simply cannot blame Mourinho for benching him as Courtois has arguably been the best keeper in the Premier League so far. After having an impressive two-year loan spell at Atletico where he won the League and Copa Del Rey, it was always going to be hard for Mourinho to play him as second fiddle to Cech despite the Czech Republic international’s impressive record of 221 clean sheets in 479 appearances for the club.
