Leeds linked with Cameroonian defender

News is circling around Elland Road that Leeds are interested in a defender with one of the best names in football, that could delight fans and comedians a like.

According to reports, Leeds’ technical director Gwyn Williams has been watching Esperance central-defender Banana Yaya with the idea of offering him a two to three year deal. It is understood Williams is banana split between the lengths of contract.

Don’t lie; you want somebody with a name like this to come to England don’t you? The game would be better for it.

Yaya was spotted by international powerhouses Esperance, who happen to be Tunisian champions, playing in the under-20 World Cup in 2009 where he scored against Germany. Since moving to Esperance though, he has only made two appearances, suggesting he could be a potential transfer market banana skin as they look to strengthen at centre-half.

Leeds have been looking for a centre-half to slot in alongside Zak Thompson, Aidy White and Tom Lees in a defence that has shipped 37 goals this term, two more than bottom club Coventry, and have not kept a clean sheet since the start of December. It may look as though Yaya, 6ft 3 and only 20 years old could be the man to fill the void, with some Leeds fans expecting the deal to be done by this Saturday’s visit of Ipswich.

It is understood that Williams will have to get Simon Grayson to act quickly to get his man, with French club Sochaux reportedly on the verge of signing him for £1.5 million, slightly more than the 900k Leeds are rumoured to be willing part with, as they look to get in on their own piece of the banana man. The French club are ready to do battle with Leeds for the top banana but with two clubs interested, I don’t think that Yaya would be So-chaux about his destination. Yes, I know that was bad.

In the meantime, a central defender who is already at Elland Road with a more sensible name this time, Tom Lees, has attracted the interest of Bolton Wanderers as they look to replace Gary Cahill. The 21-year old has shown a lot of promise and centre-half and can also be used at right-back.
