£28.5m Manchester United Target Updates On His Future

Diego Godin

Manchester United target Diego Godin has revealed that he is not interested in moving anywhere at the moment and wants to stay at Atletico Madrid.

The defender, who has a £28.5million buy-out clause is contracted with the club until 2018, has been linked with a possible move to the Premier League in recent times despite their manager Diogo Simone rubbishing the rumours. With United struggling defensively this season, Louis Van Gaal could launch a bid for the Uruguayan international.

However, Godin said that he remains committed to his current club and  could return back to his country at the twilight of his career, “Time will tell and it’s hard to know where I’ll be in the future, but I’d like to remain with Atletico for many years.

“Right now I feel I’m having the best time of my career and see retirement as a long way off.

“But it’s true I’m attracted by returning to my country and I’d like to go back there at some point, to return the affection everyone has shown towards me during my career.”

Godin has been a key player for Atletico in the last few years as they have lifted the Copa Del Rey, La Liga and UEFA Europa League with him in the defence. He has formed a formidable partnership with fellow South American Joao Miranda which has attracted a lot of interest from outside. It was always going to be hard for Atletico to keep hold of their players after a season like last time, but fortunately, a few of them want to stay at the club like Godin.

Since joining Atletico in 2010 from Villareal, Godin has made 187 appearances for his side and has been an absolute pillar at the heart of their defence. It would take a huge bid for him to leave Atletico as he is undoubtedly at the peak of his powers at the moment. He would be an ideal signing for United as they have lacked a real leader at the back since the departure of Nemanja Vidic.
