Manchester Citys Euro Deficit

Manchester City failed to grab any points away to Bayern Munich today in the second matchday of the Champions League, losing 2-0 at the Allianz Arena. Despite the result Manchester City started off pretty lively and were unlucky not to be awarded two penalties, of which one was a clear cut deal if ever there was one. It was the former Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng that was the fouling player on both occasions. David Silva showed that he isn’t like other Spanish players and instead of theatrics he tried to play in Nasri and the referee waved away the protests. The second one happened when Micah Richards was knocked off the ball, which is a feat in itself. Yaya Toure made his feelings clear but again the referee wasn’t interested.

So to the two goals in the last seven minutes of the first half from Bayerns very own version of Super Mario, Mario Gomez. He pounced on two rebounds and, although not against the run of play, it did show how fine the lines are between winning by two or losing by two.

The second half was a case of City having to try to come back into the game, and against a Bayern Munich side, in Germany it was always a tough ask. In fact Norwich City still hold the honor of the only English side to have come away with a win. It went from bad to worse for Mancini as first Dzeko seemed furious about his substitution and then one time City hero Carlos Tevez refusing to play (more about that in another article later).

This sets up the next Champions League game at home to Villereal a must win game if ever there was one. If City do not win then they will certainly be looking at an early exit from their first Champions League campaign, just when everything was looking so good.
