Ok so I know you were all wondering what would be next for Manchester City in their attempt at World domination. Hot off the heels of announcing the breathtaking Etihad campus plans and their mega million dollar deal with Etihad City now look to their online presence.
Certainly over the last few years City have upgraded and continually updated their official website including such things as ‘CityTV’ and videos showing a whole manner of things going on at the club ranging from first team training sessions to EDS highlights. From high profile signings walking into City to the kit crew.
Now they step into the world of Youtube and in doing so have become the first Premiership club to do so. This will allow City to control their rights-owned or club created videos on the video sharing website.
This will allow City fans to have access to exclusive, behind the scenes and training footage etc for free. Obviously because of copyright laws of the Premier League, City will not be able to show downloads of matches which then raises the question of what City will be able to remove?
A report mentioned Paul Dickovs iconic goal in the 1999 playoffs but my concern is the fans mobile phone footage at or of games. Will this come under the umbrella of ‘their content’? It will also allow City to have advertising space before its videos and on its page, helping with our attempt to comply with the Fifa fair play rules.
We shall have to wait and see but certainly City are showing that despite the wealth, or maybe because of it, they are willing to spend the money to reach out to new fans from every corner of the globe, but also they are not forgetting the hardcore, blue blood dedicated fans who were here before Youtube was even a twinkle in the internets eye!
