Another home game, another defeat for Chelsea.
The Blues have lost consecutive matches at Stamford Bridge for the first time since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, and many think Andre Villas Boas’ side are already out of the title race.
So what exactly is reason for the Londoners’ slump in form, a run which has seen them fall to fourth in the league, 12 points behind leaders Manchester City?
Simply, it’s uncharacteristically poor defending.
Captain John Terry is making too many mistakes, and could well be affected by the recent allegations of racism that have been made against him.
David Luiz was cleverly referred to by Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville as playing like he was being controlled by a ten year-old on a PlayStation during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool.
And with Alex not even in Villas Boas’ squad for that match, there are question marks over the young Portuguese manager’s central defensive pairing.
So step forward Bolton’s Gary Cahill, as the answer to all of AVB’s rearguard woes.
The former Aston Villa centre-back is out of contract at the end of the season, and has today been linked with a £7m move to the Bridge in January.
Perhaps the 25 year-old would bring the best out of Terry, with the duo having formed a strong partnership over the past year or so for England.
And with Cahill almost certain not to sign a new deal at the Reebok, £7m would represent a bargain price for one of this country’s finest centre-halves.
So if the Blues can get their man, maybe he could inspire a change of fortunes, and also give Luiz the kick up the backside he probably needs.
Or perhaps the 10 year-old can just keep practising.
