The debate surrounding the next England manager appears to have gone quiet this week.
However, the high opinion the British press hold for the national team hasn’t dwindled.
High-calibre managers such as Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola are continually linked with the position (surprisingly with no definitive proof attached to the stories).
Realistically, do they honestly believe that the England job is that sought after? Would the Barca boss prefer managing Messi and Xavi in favour of Glen Johnson and Bobby Zamora? Does Jose see he future with Phil Jagielka and Aaron Lennon rather than Ronaldo and Benzema?
The answer is of course no. For some reason, a narrative has been laid out that our national team is a major player in global football, and the role of coaching it is a position anyone in the world would take up.
The reality is probably the opposite however and the quicker the media catch up to it, the better. An England team with no expectation hanging over it is sure to compete with more freedom and less pressure, with an undoubted better result coming out of it.
