The big news for Arsenal today is that Olivier Giroud is all but set to sign for the club. The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium for much of the summer after a successful season for Montpellier, where his 21 league goals saw the Ligue 1 side secure their first Le Championat in their history.
Many have anticipated that his arrival will see captain Robin van Persie depart the club, with Giroud thought to have been interesting manager Arsene Wenger as the Dutchman’s replacement. However, there is no reason why both players can play together at the Gunners next season. It is no secret that van Persie was at his best playing in a more central role for Arsenal last season, netting 37 goals in all competitions.
Yet, many suspect the 28-year-old will switch from a central position to the right to accommodate Giroud, with fellow summer signing Lukas Podolski expected to play on the left of a forward three. Arsenal are, understandably, keen on keeping hold of van Persie this summer, but it won’t any possible sale won’t be on the cards, irregardless of Giroud’s arrival.
Both are two different types of striker’s, the Frenchman more of a target man to lead the line, his Dutch counterpart more of a link-up man, despite his role last season. If Arsenal do indeed keep on their talismanic front-man, with the acquisitions of Podolski and Giroud, will possess a fine strike-force next season.
