Sigurdsson would be good for Spurs

On Monday night, German newspaper Bild claimed that Tottenham Hotspur had agreed a fee of €10m for the signing of Gylfi Sigurdsson. Having spent the second half of last season on-loan with Swansea City, taking the Premier League by storm netting seven goals in his 19 appearances with the Swans, it wasn’t surprising to see interest high in the young midfielder.

Swansea agreed a fee with Hoffenheim for the transfer of the player earlier this summer, only for then manager Brendan Rodgers to take over at the helm at Liverpool. Understandably, any move to the Liberty Stadium was thrown into doubt, before eventually collapsing. A switch to Anfield, again to play under Rodgers, had been mooted, with many believing any deal was a formality.

However, Spurs have now looked to steal the 22-year-old from under the noses of the Reds, with reports last week suggesting Sigurdsson had already undergone a medical with the North Londoners. Should any deal go through, it will be a massive blow to Liverpool. But, the Reds loss is Spurs’ gain.

In Sigurdsson, the North London side would have a player who can provide goals from midfield, something they have lacked in recent years. And at just 22, he is in the Daniel Levy mould of player (low fee, high sell-on value). Not only that, with Andre Villas-Boas, reportedly, set to become new Spurs manager, he would fit seamlessly into his system of three midfielders, with one deep-lying playmaker and a box-to-box man.
