Rangers won’t feature in the SPL next season

The 2012/13 SPL will not feature Rangers, who have won the competition seven times.

The news comes as it emerges that chairman of SPL voted ‘overwhelmingly’ against a place for the Ibrox club in the Scottish top tier.

The recently reformed team, managed by Ally McCoist, could now compete in the Scottish First Division next season.

After owing £134million to unsecured creditors, the Glasgow side entered administration and faced liquidation.

The recent takeover by a consortium led by, former Sheffield United chief executive, Charles Green saw a reformation of the Old Firm giant as a new company.

SPL chairmen had previously expressed fears about a newly formed Rangers being granted readmittance into the top flight, but there is a now uncertainty about whether the 12th team will be Dunfermiline, relegated from last seasons SPL, or Dundee, who finished second in the First Division.

As players continue to head for the Ibrox exit door, next season could be a difficult one for the club. Supporters will, though, hope that they will be competing in the top tier of Scottish football again soon enough.

The absence of ‘Gers will give other teams a genuine hope of progressing and challenging Celtic, Rangers Old Firm rivals, at the top of the SPL.

How television figures will fare without the Glasgow side remains to be seen as the club command a strong following.

Before administration, the resources of Celtic and Rangers were vastly superior to that of other SPL clubs.
