Last season Agger and skrtel’s joint performances at the back were a mini highlight during King Kenny’s ill-fated reign, but with contract negotiations up in the air for both players, Brendan could be on the lookout for a new defensive partnership.  This clip of Adil Rami in the Europa League http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHHv8axmedA  and Kjaer when he was at Wolfsburg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjec9ZFywms  show that a potential double swoop for the duo could result in a pairing who will be more than comfortable within Rodgers ‘tiki-taka’ football.

Barcelona were rumoured to have had an agreement in place with Rami before the end of last season, but the Catalan giants have since targeted Javi Martinez as their top defensive target. In his first full season at Valencia, Rami has produced a string of performances that have caught the eye of several top european clubs, in the process Adil helped Valencia to once again to qualify for the Champions League. He was previously on the clubs radar when Liverpool faced his then club Lille in their first Europa league outing. Importantly, Valencia still have the plethora of debt that has seen them offload quality players such as David Villa and David Silva. So if Brendan Rodgers did make a suitable bid, Valencia precarious financial situation could see them cash in once more.

Simon Kjaer on the other hand is a player who has been admired by Liverpool in the past, and has even been quoted as saying he would like to play for Liverpool, he has since seen a move to Wolfsburg go haywire. In the Bundesliga he made a total of 35 appearances, but he was quickly farmed out to AS Roma, his recent exploits at this summer’s Euro’s, has seen him produce the form that earned him a successful trial at Real Madrid in 2007. Kjaer current situation is far from stable, where his parent club Wolfsburg would be keen to recoup the 12 million pound investment they initially paid. Liverpool could use the fact that they already have his international colleague at the club as leverage to persuade the player that a transfer to Liverpool is what he really needs.

Whether or not Rodgers will choose to make these acquisitions remains ambiguous, but to avoid another transfer in the shape of Carroll, Liverpool must act swiftly if their lose one of their two most prized centre half’s.
