Transfer window: should there be a re-think?

The spectacle that is slowing becoming the transfer window deadline day is beginning to grate on this discerning football fan. Why the big and bright countdown to the final moment akin to the most spectacular of New Year’s Eve celebrations? Next year, I almost expect there to be a couple of fireworks going off from the roof Sky Sports headquarters. Social media, too, goes crazy and throws around some ridiculous rumours.

Of course, anything I say here will not change the way in which the deadline day is broadcast but what I propose is a change to the times in which the window is open and closed. August 31st is already two weeks into the season and any new players will take time to gel with their new teams. So, why not close it a month earlier? Newly purchased players will be able to join their times in good time before the start of the season and also play in some pre-season games.

Also, special concessions should be made for teams outside of the top eight who suffer a large amount of injuries to their squad. I know there is already an emergency loan system in place but does not attract the kind of player that will be to change a team’s fortunes throughout the course of the season.

There is still a great disparity in the Premier League, despite the recent league success of Spurs, Newcastle and this season Swansea, and keeping the transfer window open for certain teams will give them a better chance of competing. Certainly, ask Brendan Rodgers right now if he could have a little more time to conduct some more transfer business he would jump at the opportunity. I don’t think the rule would apply to a ‘big’ club such as Liverpool, though.
