United have found their new all-star (Video)

Nick Powell set League 2 alight last year as he propelled Crewe Alexandra up and into League 1 – he even topped off his magnificent season with a screamer in the Play Off Final.

He capped his United debut this weekend with a goal minutes after his introduction. He put in a performance that has lead many media outlets to hail the youngster as ‘the new Paul Scholes’. Quite a tag line considering this was the same game that Scholes would mark his 700th appearance and bag a goal himself.

So what’s so good about this kid?

Well he’s from the Dario Gradi production line of talent that has seen the likes of David Platt and Dean Ashton make their way from Crewe Alexandra into the Premier League and England set up. This same production line made everyones lovable rogue Robbie Savage. Powell also seems to have his head screwed on and is reluctant to speak to the media, this is probably what sparked the comparisons to media shy Scholes and to be honest, is quite refreshing.

Powell has said that he’s not going to let himself get carried away, because his Dad would never let him. He has great aspirations to be a great success which is exactly the hunger you want from a young footballer.

I learn every day, especially from the midfielders – Scholes, Carrick, Giggsy – they’re all great, they’ve all been through it and won trophies. That’s what I want to do, so I hope to learn off them every day.’

At the tender age of 18, he has a long career ahead of him. So far he has had the best start with Gradi and Ferguson as his leaders and now with the big names at United as his peers.
