Premier League officials often get stick for bad decisions and for handing out red and yellow cards when there is simply no need to do so. There are contentious conclusions made by referees every week in England’s top flight that leaves the whole country talking for the next seventy-two hours or so.
However, something that made a pleasant change was Wigan’s game on Saturday against Fulham when match official Lee Probert jokingly gave himself a red card following a pile up between the referee, Steve Sidwell and Ben Watson. It was a comical moment that had the approval of the public for a change.
There aren’t many times that officials and players alike share a laugh, but this was one of them with Probert needing treatment following the collision. In a business that puts massive demands on referees, this was a rare moment of comedy that had the whole crowd laughing at the DW Stadium.
It was perhaps the only thing that the home fans were laughing at though, as they saw their team go down 2-1 to Fulham, with the Cottagers the superior team over the ninety minutes.
