It may’ve taken over a year, but Arsenal fans would’ve been relieved to hear that Jack Wilshere made his long awaited return from his ankle injury against West Bromwich Albion on Monday. The midfielder played an hour of his side’s 1-0 defeat to the Baggies in the reserve team encounter.

His return will be welcomed by all Gunners, who have been keen for the creative midfielder to return to first-team duties for well over 12 months now. It may not have been a competitive encounter for the England international, but players have to start somewhere in the return from a lengthy lay out.

His creative influence may not have been missing this season, following the form of Mikel Arteta and the arrival of Santi Cazorla, but Arsenal fans remain confident that he will return to the first-team sooner rather than later.

This will now be deemed a distinct possibility following his run-out against West Brom on Monday, despite it being just a reserve encounter. The Gunners faithful are hopeful he can continue his rehabilitation from the ankle problem, especially since Abou Diaby limped out of the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

While Wilshere didn’t force his name onto the score sheet or make any assists for his team mates, the important factor at the moment is seeing the youngster build up his fitness following such a long time on the sidelines.

Arsenal fans will be delighted to have seen him play an hour, while been boosted by the news that Emmanuel Frimpong also made an appearance for the Gunners. However, it’s vital that both aren’t rushed back from injury, but it’s promising news for both players to have played a part in the encounter.
