Leon Osman – Everton’s underrated hero (Video)

With any player, one that has come through the youth team ranks is one that fans can take to heart. Look at Tottenham Hotspur and Ledley King. Manchester United with Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs. Chelsea and John Terry. There is certainly one player that can be added to the list; Everton and Leon Osman.

The midfielder has been on the books at Goodison Park for 15 years now, having joined the academy side in 1997 before making his senior debut during the 2002/03 season. Loan spells with Carlisle United and Derby County gave Osman the chances to showcase his capability to the watching world and, most importantly, then recently appointed Toffee’s boss David Moyes.

His performances with the Football League duo allowed the Scot to witness the abilities of the 31-year-old first hand and it’s hardly surprising that, following his return from Derby, he has been a regular fixture in the Everton starting XI since the 2004/05 season.

His input was largely evident during the weekends 2-2 draw with Liverpool, having netted the equaliser two minutes after Luis Suarez had doubled the Reds advantage. It’s fair to assume that Osman has firmly established himself as a key member of the Everton squad, no matter which player Moyes brings in.

The midfielders form has seen many expect an England call-up for the 31-year-old, who is yet to make an appearance for the national side, regardless of the form of his compatriots within the Premier League.

It is difficult to envision Osman playing for another team other than Everton, with the player certainly endearing himself to the Toffee’s faithful. However, it is unlikely that a rival club would bid for the midfielder, such is his affection for the club and importance to Moyes.
