The goalpost can sometimes be an enemy, sometimes a saviour, and sometimes even a physical threat.
We have seen players such as Phil Babb collide into the post in hilarious but all-the-same excruciatingly painful manner.
Last night in the Champions League fixtures, Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller didn’t seem to want to take his chances with the woodwork.
In a game in the so called ‘group of death’, a win for Dortmund would have given them pole position to win the group and avoid a potentially tricky draw in the round of 16. This seemed like happening at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid, when goals from exciting youngsters Marco Reus and Mario Gotze put the German champions into a 2-1 lead.
Come the 89th minute, Jose Mourinho’s men were still knocking on the door, and were awarded with a free-kick to be taking by Mesut Ozil.
Now, you would have thought, given the time in the match and its importance (Man City’s disastrous campaign made it less important than it should have been, mind), the goalkeeper would have risked everything to keep the ball out, especially because of the somewhat predictable nature of where Ozil could have put the ball, and because of the ‘keeper’s great performances in the match up to this point.
