Red card ramifications
Adebayor’s reckless tackle which led to his dismissal showed a considerable amount of naivety from a man whose experience was important to his team’s chances of victory.
The striker’s power and energy was a key contributing factor to Tottenham’s bright start at the Emirates. Having scored to put his team 1-0 up, he let the intensity of the occasion get the better of him with a wild and thoughtless tackle on Santi Cazorla.
The red card proved to be a defining point in the game which saw Arsenal run out 4-2 winners over their North London rivals.
AVB will now be left questioning his decision to start a man whose passion for the match was always going to surpass others and be in danger of spiralling out of control.
Adebayor, a malicious player he most certainly is not, has demonstrated such confounding behaviour before and AVB knew playing him was a risk. The result is another London derby defeat and a three match ban for a player who for 16 minutes suggested a partnership with Defoe has the potential of being very effective.
Perhaps the latter will be what Spurs will suffer from the most. With the busy Christmas period fast approaching, now would have been the perfect time for the Defoe-Adebayor partnership to start gaining momentum.
