So, it’s happened Chelsea fans, you haven’t made it passed the group stages of the Champions League.
You will only be able to sing that song about being champions of Europe for another six months now. I suppose you can lament the fact that you were drawn in quite a tough group looking back on it. Juventus are champions of Italy and Shaktar Donetsk have been one of the surprise packages in this year’s competition.
It is probably made even tougher with last night’s thumping of FC Nordsjaelland and finishing with 10 points, the same as Donetsk, going out only on head to head goals scored between the two teams. The truth is, though, that Chelsea made life extremely difficult for themselves early on.
Before Chelsea fans begin to blast Rafa Benitez one again and complain extensively about the state of their team, they should consider the successes of last year (after a poor start to the season) and the fact that they did actually win the Champions League on the back of one the most unlikely, brilliant and magical runs any team has gone on in the history of the competition.
Yes, they make history by being the first winners not to advance past the group stages but that should hardly matter and it is times like this that perspective is needed in light of Chelsea’s very successful decade.
This little hiccup most be forgetton quickly and focus turned back onto flailing domestic matters and the upcoming cup competitions which they always delight in.
So, time to stop aiming all your hate and anger towards your manager Chelsea fans and time to start getting behind your team and, if you can bear it, Benitez.
