The Wigan Athletic fans out there will be happy to see Roberto Martinez has done his business this January nice and early, allowing him to plan another great escape from the clutches of the Premier League’s relegation zone.
I have to be honest, Wigan’s result isn’t something I look out for regularly, but to see them lurking dangerously above the bottom three doesn’t take me by surprise at all. So far this season the Latics have won only 5 games and drawn 3, and while this puts them nearly halfway to the sacred 40 points mark, it will be the regular losses and lack of goals that will worry Martinez and owner Dave Whelan.
This season Wigan have twice suffered consecutive defeats and have twice been on a run of three defeats on the bounce, a worrying statistic when Martinez’s side struggle to string points together when they are not on a losing run.
As for goals, Wigan have scored just 21 league goals in 20 games with Arouna Koné their top scorer with six, one less than last season’s top scorer Franco Di Santo scored in the whole campaign.
To add some extra firepower to his ranks Martinez has added Chilean striker Angelo Henriquez on loan for the rest of the season from Premier League big boys Manchester United.
The deal for Henriquez favours both sides as United can give their 18-year-old a taste of Premier League football and see if he will make the grade in the future, while Wigan are getting the hottest prospect out of Chile to aid their fight for survival this season.
