A Welsh derby in the English Premier League?

With Cardiff pushing hard for promotion and currently sitting eight points clear at the top of the Championship the chances of a new derby in the Premier League looms large.

It would definitely be a feisty one with the added advantage of it being held in a different country to the league in which they play.  I’m sure any die-hard Welsh fans would take great delight in letting the fans of other teams in the English Premier League know that.

With Swansea looking the part more and more in the top-flight it is only down to whether Cardiff can keep up the pace at the top of the league in order to join them.  Cardiff’s away form is a mild concern but their home form has been exceptional.  Twelve wins in fourteen games and twenty five goals scored.  If they remain that hard to beat at home and toughen up away, a league derby could be on again.

The first of the South Wales derbies, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was played in 1912.  A hundred years on Cardiff are the top team, they have won 43 of the 104 meetings in all competitions.  I’m sure that Swans fans will be divided, they must be equally desperate to face the Bluebirds (now in red) in the league but equally keen to stay a league above their rivals.

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing them play against one another, but I’m most excited about the possibility of Newport Town getting into the Premier League to complete the South Wales derby.
