It is now widely regarded that Liverpool’s Spanish hero between the sticks Pepe Reina’s best days are behind him, and that Brad Jones – his understudy – is far from good enough to be the Reds permanent number 1, so we take a few moments to look at 5 goalkeepers who could potentially take the shirt.
Despite the enormous rumours that Brendan Rodgers is set to continue his moulding of a young side for the future with the acquisition of Birmingham City’s Jack Butland, we have chosen to focus on the alternatives.
Reina has given us some great memories. From the memorable beach ball saga against Sunderland a few years back or the mishaps against Everton in the Merseyside derby, to the acrobatic saves against the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal to snatch points in recent seasons, Reina has been one of the top keepers in the league for some time.
It is sad to see a professional’s career go downhill regardless of the reason (age, injuries, performances) and Reina, I am sure will live the last few years of his career successfully if he does leave Anfield.
