Liverpool must stick with Rodgers

Succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at home to any team in the league is hardly the most welcome of propositions for any club. Yet, on Monday night Liverpool were on the receiving end of that very scoreline having been humbled by a resolute West Bromwich Albion side.

The Baggies secured a smash and grab victory courtesy of goals from Gareth McAuley and Romelu Lukaku, who has Ben Foster to thank after saving Steven Gerrard’s in the 75th minute. Upon the final whistle, however, Twitter all but erupted into an array of vitriolic abuse aimed at the Reds board calling for the head of Brendan Rodgers

The 40-year-old was appointed Liverpool manager following an impressive campaign with Swansea City, which only aided in pushing his stock higher. However, it’s fair to say that it hasn’t quite worked out as well as many had initially hoped for Rodgers at Anfield.

Any hopes of securing a top four finish were quashed in the defeat to West Brom, with Liverpool now 12 points behind fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur. However, those calling for the board to relieve Rodgers of his duties need to understand that at times a club needs to take one step backwards to move two forwards.

Granted the results aren’t of the expectations of Anfield, but sustainability is key for a club of Liverpool’s stature at present, especially if they are to return to the lofty heights of their past. It may not be aesthetically pleasing and a tough pill for some fans to swallow, but sticking with Rodgers will be the best move the club can make, especially with this year remaining that of a transitional one for the Merseyside giants.
