The modern-day right-back is expected to bomb forward at every opportunity, hold the ability to whip dangerous crosses into the danger-are and also act as a brick wall at the back to deter any opposition attacks. Although it is the normal procedure for players to either have the attacking side or the defensive capabilities but rarely both, the list that I have put together holds 5 of the greatest at both in the Premier League era.
The Premier League is full of quality full-backs at present. Glen Johnson at Liverpool, Rafael at Manchester United, Branislav Ivanovic at Chelsea, Bacary Sagna at Arsenal, Pablo Zabaleta at Manchester City… You catch my drift.
To start you off here is arguably the greatest right-back in footballing history – Cafu. The Brazilian was the greatest at steaming down the flank and drilling balls into his teammates, he held the positional sense to confused attackers, and also had the technical ability to challenge the most creative central midfielders of all time.
Enjoy.
