It’s a fair assumption that the lack of striking prowess on the Everton frontline is what will inevitably cost them a place in the Champions League this season.
After Marouane Fellaini began the year in superb fashion, the powerful Belgian has tailed off considerably since his blisterning start to the campaign, while Nikica Jelavic’s inability to rekindle his shooting ability that won him numerous plaudits following his switch from Rangers hasn’t aided in their quest.
Throw in the inconsistency of Victor Anichebe and injury problems of Kevin Mirallas and it’s no wonder that the Toffees are likely to miss out on a place amongst Europe’s elite next year. However, reports suggest that the club are planning a move for FC Porto winger Christian Atsu in a bid to address the problem for the new campaign.
The Ghana international was in impressive form for the national team during the Africa Cup of Nations and interest in the 21-year-old has been expectedly high. After a season long loan spell with Rio Ave last season, the likelihood of Porto keeping hold of the swift wideman has increased substantially.
However, it is unlikely to deter Everton, who will be keen to strengthen over the summer, if only to convince David Moyes, whose contract expires at the end of the season, and Fellaini that their long term futures lay at Goodison Park.
