Mike Magee – MLS Top Scorer 2013?

Mike Magee grabbed the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in LA Galaxy’s home win against the Colorado Rapids last Sunday. That goal saw him sneak to the top of the goal scorer table with 4 goals in 3 games.

He got off to a flyer after scoring a hatrick in the opening game of the season at home to Chicago Fire, but does the man from Illinois have what it takes to top the table come season end?

There is no doubt that Magee knows where the goal is but at this early stage, it’s difficult to say if he is worthy of being mentioned alongside the likes of last season’s table topper Chris Wondolowski of the San Jose Earthquakes.

Wondolowski had the season of his career thus far during the 2012 MLS season, and a repeat of that would cement his stature as a powerhouse and accomplished goal scoring machine in the MLS, much like the New York Red Bulls front man, Thierry Henry.

Okay, Henry has a silky touch and a lot of natural ability that few players in the MLS could ever dream to have, and he cemented his stature on a world scale, but the likes of Wondolowski and possibly Magee have a keen eye for goal and no matter where they are in and around the box when the ball comes to them, they know exactly where the goal is. That is what makes a striker stand out head and shoulders above the rest in the league.

Forwards like Wondolowski, Henry, Kenny Cooper and Robbie Keane to name but a few are fine examples of how to play as a forward, not just in the MLS, but in any league around the world, and if they continue this season as they did last season with the addition of Mike Magee to mix things up a bit in the top goal scorer race, then I think we are in for a fantastic season of soccer stateside.
