After an uncomfortable start, Gennaro Gattuso has steered Swiss Super League outfit Sion into calmer waters.
Sion have remained undefeated in their previous 5 League outings in which they have conceded only 3 goals under boss and former World Cup and Champions League winner Gattuso. Although 4 of the last 5 games have ended in draws, Gattuso has clearly added some much needed defensive steel to his adopted Swiss team after he had opened his managerial career with two defeats.
Gattuso took over the reins as Head Coach of Sion in February after they had suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to FC Thun under the management of Victor Munoz. In a surprise move last summer, Gattuso opted to move to Switzerland to play with Sion after the Milan hierarchy took the decision to move on the ‘Old Guard’ from the San Siro.
With 8 games remaining of the Super League season, a Europa League spot certainly looks to be within Sion’s grasp as the club currently lie in fourth place.
Northern Ireland international and former Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty also joined Sion last summer and has been full of praise for his new manager commenting recently:
“As a player he was fantastic and I’m sure he can be the same as a coach.”
“The boss won everything when he was playing, the World Cup, the Champions League … and to have him as the coach will help me improve as a player.”
