Manchester United aren’t blessed with midfield talent at the moment. Sure, Paul Scholes is on of the greatest in the history of English football, but he will be retiring in the near future. Michael Carrick has also shown just what a player he is, but it is hard to be the star from the anchorman position. Tom Cleverley has proved himself to be an exciting young player with bags of potential, but time will tell if he hits the heights expected. And Andrerson… Well, it’s best we don’t talk about Anderson.
So, bearing all that in mind it comes as no shock that The Express is reporting that Sir Alex Ferguson is lining up a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan in the summer.
The Germany international is in the form of his life at present and was a huge factor in BVB’s road to the Champions League final. His four goals and outstanding individual displays have seen him tipped to be one of the greatest in European football, but if United want to secure his services then an offer of around £17m may be needed.
The 22-year-old hasn’t exactly done his manager Jurgen Klopp any favours by hinting that it would be a lifelong ambition to leave for the Premier League. He told Sport Bild: “It is not reprehensible to answer such questions (of a future career in England or Spain) with ‘yes’.
“Everyone has a childhood dream on what he would like to achieve one day and my dream always was to play in England or Spain.”
