Tottenham’s pursuit of Leandro Damiao now more important than ever?

Tottenham will be playing in the Europa League next season after finishing in fifth place in the Premiership being pipped to the final Champions League spot by Arsenal. Spurs managed to get the victory they needed over Sunderland, but it wasn’t good enough as Arsenal managed to beat Newcastle at St James’s meaning they take the place by just one point. Jubilation for Arsenal, agony for Spurs, but this season has definitely been one of many positive for Tottenham and it is clear what they must do to ensure they don’t miss out on Champions League football again next year.

Of course the number one priority will be keeping hold of ‘Player of the year and young player of the year’ Gareth Bale who has had a truly sensational season. If they can keep hold of the Welsh man they will definitely be in the running again next year as he has shown he has the ability to single handedly turn no points into 3 points. Something I think is even more crucial to Tottenham though is for them to sign a striker that is going to get them a guaranteed 20 goals+ a season.

One of the main reasons why Tottenham have missed out this year is due to their goal scoring. Despite scoring 15 goals this year Defoe has struggled with niggling injuries and can’t be relied upon to play week in week out as a lone striker all year, whereas Adebayor has been disappointing showing flashes of brilliance but more often than not looking disinterested.

Tottenham have been linked with Brazilian Leandro Damiao for a long time now and many people think that this coming summer will be when they will finally get their man. The 23-year-old has scored 28 goals for Internacional in Brazil in just 72 games, and has already been capped 16 times for his country. He is pacy, strong and powerful with an eye for goal, he has been a target for Spurs for a very long time, and the hierarchy at the club are hopeful that a deal can be agreed upon this summer.

If they can sign him they will be hopeful that he will be able to fire them to a much more comfortable position in the top four next season. Tottenham already have a great team with a solid defence and a very good midfield which will be boosted by the return from injury of Sandro, the missing piece of the puzzle is just a striker which will consistently score goals. If they can get that player in, which most expect will be Damiao they will feel much more confident about reaching the Champions League after agonisingly missing out in the last two years.
