For a game that involves just 22 players and a ball, it is amazing how many moments of comedy can occur on a football pitch. Players falling over, referees getting hit by the ball, incredible open goal misses, diving attempts and many other ridiculous occurrences. It may seem a little childish to laugh at such things, but most of us just can’t help it, especially when it happens to the rich and famous superstars. The bigger the name, the better we feel when they attempt a pass or shot and it all goes horribly wrong!
Football is a serious sport that is enjoyed by people across the globe. Whilst there are many different teams and millions of fans that regularly watch matches, there are few aspects that can be agreed upon. Who is the best player in the world? Which is the strongest team in Europe? Should Gareth Bale stay at Spurs? Will David Moyes succeed at Manchester United? Opinions are divided on almost everything football related, but at least we can all agree on one thing; footballers falling over or getting hit in the face by the ball is humorous, whatever your take on the game or whichever team you follow.
In a time where money is dominating the sport and every little detail is so very important, when managers and players rarely smile or laugh and all incidents have to be analysed to death, let us enjoy a few moments of comedy gold and remember that football certainly is a funny old game!
