Luka Modric is a major transfer target for new Manchester United boss David Moyes this summer.
It is thought that Moyes has been making discreet enquiries about the Real Madrid star, who would cost the Red Devils around £24million.
However, Modric is also wanted at Chelsea with the incoming Blues boss Jose Mourinho tempted to bring the Croatia playmaker with him when he moves from the Bernabeu to Stamford Bridge.
But Moyes is keen to snap up the former Tottenham midfielder in a £24million deal when the transfer window opens on July 1.
The former Everton boss is a big admirer of Modric who was also a target for retired United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
United now see a chance of bringing the 27-year-old to Old Trafford with Madrid undergoing their own upheaval this summer.
Modric left Spurs a year ago in a £33m transfer to Madrid but his starting appearances this season have often been hampered by Mourinho choosing Xabi Alonso for the play-maker role.
But Modric made his mark against United in the second leg of the last 16 Champions League clash at Old Trafford, coming on as a substitute after Nani had been sent off.
Modric scored the all-important equaliser and played a pivotal role in the rest of the game which Madrid won 2-1.
It will be an interesting battle between Manchester United and Chelsea as to who wins the signature of such a top quality midfielder. It could be a pivotal moment in terms of next year’s title race.
