You can always rely on Kevin Phillips (video)

Kevin Phillips is one of those players that seem to have been around forever but the special thing about Phillips is that he hasn’t just been around forever he’s also consistently produced the goods and scored goals at the highest level in his time as a footballer.

He is a man you can rely on when you need a goal he just seems to have that lethal instinct when it comes to putting a ball in the net. His ability to find a goal out of nowhere is surely what led Ian Holloway to loan Phillips from his former club Blackpool on the last day of the January transfer window and his faith in the veteran was definitely rewarded yesterday.  Over his career he has scored a total of 244 goals for eight different clubs and some of those have been very important goals but yesterdays strike must rank up at the top as one of the most important goals he’s ever scored.

The Championship play-off final is a match worth £120 million pounds to the winners as they take promotion to the Premiership and when Crystal Palace where awarded a penalty in the first half of extra time Phillips was the man chosen to take the spot-kick. Cool as you like Phillips despatched the penalty into ‘the onion bag’ and he led the celebrations as Crystal Palace set course for the top flight after 8 years away.

It was cruel blow for Watford losing to a goal scored by a player who’s career really began at the club all the way back in 1994, but once Phillips stepped up there was a sense of inevitability about what was going to happen next.

At 39 years-of-age Kevin Phillips may be getting on a bit now in terms of footballers but he still manages to prove time and time again that he is more than able of scoring goals when it matters. For that reason alone the striker surely deserves one last go in the Premier League with Crystal Palace. Hopefully if Holloway does manage to get Phillips to sign permanently will we see the evergreen striker find the net in the Premiership once again!

Here are some of Phillips best career goals for you to enjoy.
