3 Outside Bets to make England’s World Cup squad should they qualify

As we know a lot can change in a year. With England struggling in their World Cup qualification group, it feels strange writing this article as they may not even be at the tournament next June. However, if they do make it there is sure to be a slightly different look to the squad than there is now. If certain players have breakthrough seasons, they can break into the squad and make a place their own. Let’s look at three outside bets to make it to Brazil.

Tom Ince

Ince had a fantastic season in the Championship with Blackpool, scoring 18 league goals from midfield. If he could get a move to a Premier League club and replicate this sort of form then a World Cup place next summer is not out of the question. With Liverpool still interested, there is potential to push for a place on the plane if the move comes to fruition.

Wilfried Zaha

Unlike Ince, Zaha has already secured a big money move to a top Premier League club. He sealed his £15million move to Manchester United in January but was immediately loaned back to Crystal Palace. He helped the Eagles return to the top flight and if he can having a good first season at Old Trafford, there is no reason why he can’t be on that plane next summer.

Jay Rodriguez

If England were to suffer a similar injury struggle in their striking positions like they did in their recent friendlies, Jay Rodriguez of Southampton could be an outside bet. Rodriguez enjoyed a great first season in the Premier League, forming a great partnership with fellow Englishman Rickie Lambert. If the former Burnley man can perform well next season, he could enter Roy Hodgson’s thoughts.
