Arsenal target Premier League defender as current crop continue to be linked with a move

Arsenal are in the hunt for Newcastle’s Steven Taylor, according to the Daily Mail. The Gunners have three of the best central defenders in Europe in the shapes of Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen, but with rumours of the latter two wanting a move away from the club it has caused some at Arsenal to start to sweat.

The 27-year-old defender has an abundance of talent but has struggled with injuries throughout his entire career and is the reason so many have been shocked by the rumour that Arsene Wenger has put the Geordie on his shortlist for the summer.

Thomas Vermaelen has been linked with a move away as he has struggled to retain a place in the starting 11 and has recently slipped down the pecking order at the Emirates, and with Manchester United lurking after the club suggested that the Belgian is available for around £5m.

Koscielny has been said to want away if Arsenal cannot secure any silverware this season, but as he is now first choice to partner Mertesacker in the hear of the defence he is willing to give it another year.

That’s nice of him, isn’t it Gooners?

If the club are serious about pushing for a trophy then someone with an injury history as poor as Taylor is probably the last person they need.
