A lot has been said about Luis Suarez over the last few months, but as he makes plans to escape from the English press there is another man who has been continually linked with a move away from Liverpool. Pepe Reina is fancied to take the vacant Barcelona post this summer as the Reds move closer to a move for Sunderland shot-stopper Simon Mignolet in a deal worth almost £9m, but according to the Express the Spanish keeper is ready to stay in Merseyside and fight for his place.
Reina made a rare appearance for his national side last night as Spain battered Tahiti 10-0 in the Confederations Cup, and although he had hardly a sniff of the ball he still produced a professional display when he was called into action.
The general feel around Reina is that his form is in a downward spiral and has been for the last few years, but with a strong challenger for his number 1 shirt then some believe that his performances could pick up. Madrid-born Reina came through the ranks of Barcelona as a youth and went on to make nearly 50 appearances for the Camp Nou side, and he has spoken of the rumours linking him back there.
He said: “If there was a chance to improve and go to a bigger club it would be a good, but there are few clubs bigger than Liverpool. In principle my plan is to continue.”
